817 Art

12:15 AM Posted by Unknown , , ,
The 817 is taking over 512 for a post. Fort Worth is only a 3hour drive away, and currently it is a trip well worth the 3 hours because CARAVAGGIO is there. The Caravaggio. The bad boy of the Renaissance art world. The man deserves a post. And a road trip.

Well, I'm having a difficult time readjusting to the humdrum daily routine after an amazingly joyful weekend at the wedding of two college friends (hence why it has taken me 2 weeks to post!). They were even kind enough to get married in Fort Worth, Texas on the weekend the "Caravaggio and His Followers in Rome" exhibit opened at the Kimbell. Best...friends...ever.

A quick rundown:
The exhibit is broken down into four main parts: "Music and Youth," "Cardsharps & Fortune Tellers," "Saints," and "The Sacred Narrative."
The exhibit in terms of works of art? Marvelous! It's the second largest display of his paintings in North America.
In terms of flow? Not as obvious as it should have been - I'm a museum junkie and I inevitably ended up going against the intended flow at this exhibit.
In terms of information? Oh, boy...

Ok. Most exhibits I attend leave me wanting more since the texts that accompany the works are not detailed or informative enough. The "Caravaggio" exhibit did not commit this crime - quite the contrary. The curator clearly had a lot to say, to the point that the texts became a composite of various facts that weren't necessarily cohesive or did not answer my questions as a viewer in relation to the exhibit. However, there is a lot of information, which is refreshing, but I recommend spending a day just looking at the art, and then returning on another day to read the text.

Seeing the works of Caravaggio juxtaposed with his followers was incredibly interesting. In art history courses the slides of images of the works did not truly depict how obviously talented Caravaggio was when compared to those trying to mimic him. I spent an embarrassingly long time comparing the grapes in some of Caravaggio paintings to those of his followers. His followers' grapes certainly had the styling of paint like Caravaggio's grapes, but they always looked labored whereas Caravaggio's grapes looked effortless (and better). I did find a few new artists that I have since looked up to learn more about them after seeing 1 or 2 of their paintings (i.e. Nicholas Tournier & Valentin de Boulonge), so even the works by Caravaggio's followers is engaging.

I highly recommend going to see the Caravaggio exhibit. 3 hours in a car is worth it!

The Prince of Denmark

11:20 PM Posted by Unknown , ,
I was reunited with theater productions this past summer, having taken a year hiatus from any sort of live performance whilst unemployed and unable to purchase tickets. Can I just say...Man! It feels good to be back in the audience!

This past Sunday I had an afternoon dalliance with the Prince of Denmark for the first time (outside the pages of a book) and I was pleasantly rewarded with a spectacular showing by all the actors of Austin Shakespeare that took part in Hamlet. Polonius had me laughing constantly with his aside comments and jaunty demeanor, Ophelia truly worked the insane angle in the end with an amazingly believable crazy act, the king/uncle was very stately, and Hamlet murdered (pune intended) the performance with great depth of emotion and energy. (You can find an eloquent review of Hamlet here, or here.)

After seeing this play, I am highly anticipating future productions by Austin Shakespeare, plan to see Arcadia in the spring, and wholeheartedly recommend anything they perform.

Hm. Hamlet has put me in the mood for some Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead... #popcorn

AMOA: Laguna Gloria Photography Excursion

12:00 PM Posted by Unknown ,
All right, this isn't much of a geographic deviation from the last Photography Excursion post suggestion, but that's because that area of Austin is beautiful. Right along the river, hills galore, and abundant trees in an otherwise urban environment directly to the east in downtown Austin.

I now give you: AMOA Laguna Gloria.
Exterior view of the Driscoll Villa
Photography by Broken Piggy Bank
The museum itself is an Italian-style villa with a magnificent interior that still has many of its original fixtures and floors from the 1920's when it was built. It was originally the home of Clara Driscoll, the famed Daughter of the Republic known as the Savior of the Alamo. The interior itself is photo worthy, and photography is welcome in the museum.

The grounds upon which the villa museum stand are vast and beautiful. The plot of land was once owned by Stephen F. Austin, for you history buffs out there, but he never actualized his dream of building a home on the land. Clara Driscoll purchased the land since it put her in mind of Italy, where she and her husband spent their honeymoon, which can give you a sense for the kind of landscape you will encounter.

If you're searching for some spectacular nature pics, Laguna Gloria is your spot. If you want a gorgeous backdrop for wedding photos or family shots, you've got it. (There are fees associated with commercial photography, such as wedding photos - be sure to check their website for pricing and call the museum to set up a time for a  photo shoot). Since this is located next to Mayfield Park (the subject of the last photography excursion post), you will also find peacocks around Laguna Gloria.

As the weather begins to get a bit cooler, this is an excellent spot to spend an afternoon, with or without a camera...no. Definitely with a camera ;)

Blanton Student Fest

11:21 AM Posted by Unknown , ,
Today is the Blanton Museum of Art's Student Fest in which University of Texas students receive free admission and can take part in various activities throughout the day. Have an hour or two between classes? Then stop on by!

A list of the day's activities:
10am-12pm: breakfast tacos & coffee specials at the Cafe
12pm-2pm: Choose Your Own Adventure Tours
2pm-7:30pm: Free-drawing activity
2pm-4pm: Scavenger Hunt through the Galleries (how cool?!) - with a participation prize at the end, too!
2pm-4pm: Retro cartoon time
4pm-5:30pm: Trivia Game - "Geeks Who Drink" style - winning team receives prizes
5:30pm-6:15pm: Monde Green Performance in the outdoor plaza
5:30pm-7:30pm: Snacks from Whole Foods
6:15pm-7:15pm: Student led tours of El Anatsui
6pm-8pm: El Anatsui inspired art making activity
7pm-7:45pm: Searching for Signal Performance

At times like these I am envious of students at large universities with fantastic resources and large museums affiliated with the schools. So many of those activities sound FUN.

Bubbles Galore

7:12 PM Posted by Unknown
I hope everyone took advantage of the free museums today. I was hunkered down at Laguna Gloria being a volunteer for the day, so my only experience is of bubbles, bubbles, and more bubbles.

The house museum itself is lovely, with stunningly beautiful grounds that overlook the river and fetch a nice breeze off the water; however, in 100 degree temperatures, even a breeze is no relief. I was a ball of sweat all day.

I spent my afternoon outside with the bubble station where kids got to witness the Bubble Chef in all her glory create fabulously intricate bubbles: bubbles filled with smoke, cube bubbles, massive bubbles...basically any bubble imaginable. Those bubbles were cool. A word of warning: the Bubble Lady was either off her game today, extremely stressed, or she is not good with people. We quickly learned that the Bubble Lady had an attitude this afternoon. My favorite quote: "No, there are no more shows. As the sign clearly reads, the last one just ended." I think its safe to say she won't be appearing anywhere near AMOA ever again, despite her neat bubble tricks.

While my Austin Museum Day did not consist of art galore, it was a pleasant afternoon (despite the Bubble Lady's attitude). Every time I've volunteered in new situations or with new organizations, I've met interesting, nice people who are volunteering alongside me. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people.

OH! I almost forgot...Strawberry Basil Smoothies?! Thank the gods-that-be someone thought to put those together - it's damn good.

Austin Museum Day is September 25th! As in tomorrow.

It's a day in which participating museums (and there are numerous participants!) open their doors with no admission fees and provide fun activities for the public. It's a family-friendly day, or a single-friendly day of free art!

Architecture & Arthouse

12:45 AM Posted by Unknown ,
Time for a slightly embarrassing revelation: This past Friday was my first time to see the inside of Arthouse since its renovation. I know! I know! I am a bad art lover. I mean, sure, I've driven by it, walked by it, and even paused to inspect the exterior. But I had not gone inside it.

I can now say that I'm thoroughly impressed. The building has a natural flow to it. The stairs are obvious, the gallery areas open and inviting, and the narrow spaces scream transitional hallway space. Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects did a magnificent job.

One of my favorite, dramatic elements of the design is the main staircase leading up the second floor. The floating stairs are unique - made from gorgeous Ipe (Brazilian hardwood). Each stair wraps up one side of the stairwell to form a fence-like wall for the hallway of the second floor. It has an effortless feel, yet is a functional design element and adds visual interest and rich color to an otherwise neutral interior palette.

There are also spots where the original brick is still exposed, reminding the viewer/visitor of the building's past. In 1851 the building became the first 3-story brick building on Congress Ave. Now the 3-story structure is dwarfed by surrounding steel skyscrapers, but it still offers a fantastic, although limited, view from the rooftop.

Not only do you get to see great exhibits when visiting Arthouse, you also get to walk through a beautiful, thoughtful design.

Opening of Anxiety of Photography

11:40 PM Posted by Unknown , ,
"Anxiety of Photography" opened tonight @ Arthouse.

Initial reaction from yours truly, a volunteer docent:

I love openings of exhibits at museums. It's a wholly separate experience from a typical museum visit. In place of the soft whispers is a welcoming din of voices (I'm sure serving alcohol at these events helps in that regard). I've found my experience of the art itself is changed by the difference in surroundings. Instead of an austere museum space, there are people everywhere; other bodies are close by, sometimes obstructing the view of the art, and it feels like much more of a communal activity than a singular viewing on a typical visit. I was hoping for some good "overheard" conversations, but the design of the building causes the conversations around you to turn into muffled white noise. I was really disappointed about this when trying to listen to an elderly man explain to his companions the way gelatin plates can be manipulated.

Also, openings bring such a diverse crowd! I'm always thrilled to see young children at museums (and this is coming from someone with a generally strong dislike for kids). It gives me hope for the future to see parents taking the time to expose children to art, to instill in them an appreciation for a museum visit.

The view from the top of Arthouse at night is stunning! They have a prime location downtown right near the capital off of Congress & 7th street. Go there. Climb the stairs. Be amazed. Oh, and bring your camera when you do.

Photography Excursion

11:44 PM Posted by Unknown ,
During my time in college I would spend afternoons at least once a month on "Photography Excursions." I explored much of the rural areas surrounding the college town & often times ended up with a handful of fairly interesting photos. As a [very amateur] photographer, I feel the urge to just go take pictures, else wise I get antsy. If you like to go on your own photography excursions or you're just looking for a beautiful backdrop for family photos, I highly recommend Mayfield Park.

If you're an Austinite, you're most likely familiar with the little oasis of Mayfield Park, and with all the shady trees it's not entirely out of the question during the summer as an outdoor activity. The plot of land has a cottage built in the Bungalow style from the early 1900's and features a lovely garden and pond with various wildlife taking refuge among the foliage (I even spotted a large snake coiled up in a landmass in the middle of a pond once - it left me alone).

For me, the peacocks are the visual highlight of Mayfield Park. They're in trees, on the ground, making their typical ungodly noises, and definitely trying to impress visitors by strutting their gorgeous feathers. Fun fact: the current peacocks are descendants of the original peacocks gifted to the Mayfield family back in the 1930's.

Mayfield Park is worth an outing...Show up. Take Pictures. Get flirted with by peacocks. (Hey, they're pretty when they flirt.)

Dirty. Rotten! SCOUNDRELS!

10:59 PM Posted by Unknown , , ,
Georgetown Palace Theater's production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, directed by Mary Ellen Butler, is a non-stop belly-laugh inducing musical with marvelous acting and fantastic singing. Not only will I be humming the songs for the next week, I will not be able to get some of those scenes out of my head for the rest of my life - they were that entertaining and long term memory worthy.

The musical centers around two con men in France carrying out multiple cons on unsuspecting wealthy women. Of course, not everything can go according to plan...

The play is currently running at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin until August 28th. For a complete synopsis of the play, visit the Paramount's website. You can also buy your tickets online...which you should do because everyone needs a dirty rotten scoundrel in their life ;)

Art in Austin? Capital!

2:50 PM Posted by Unknown

Austin, Texas is a hub of artistic expression and has a lot to offer for artistic outlets. Whether you're looking for an art encounter, musical performance, theatrical production, or general art on the street...look no further!

This blog is dedicated to all forms of art here in the capital city.
